Lá in Amstardam/Day in Amsterdam

A few weeks ago, my family and I went on a trip to Amsterdam. We had a really good time so I’ve decided to write about it.
At 4:40am, we arrived in Amsterdam. When we got to our apartment, we went to bed for the last few hours before morning. When we got up, we went to breakfast in the main hall of the resort. We had the choice of ‘Wentelteefjes’ (Dutch eggy bread), ‘Bacon and Apple Pancakes’ or ‘Uitsmijter’ (Fried ham and egg breakfast). I went for the Bacon an Apple Pancakes as they seemed delicious.
When our breakfasts were finished, we went sight-seeing. First we went to ‘Anne Frank’s House’ . I was amazed how hidden the secret annex was. Then we went to the ‘Van Gogh Museum’. We looked at his paintings and got dinner in a place called ‘De Kas’. We went back to the apartment to have dinner then and relaxed before going to bed.
On the last day of our trip we went through some of the canals. There was every sort of boat from dinner canals to tourist canals. When it was time to go home, we were all disappointed because our stay had been so fun. When we landed back in Ireland, we drove home and talked about how amazing Amsterdam really was.

Sweet Sixteen

It all started on the 23rd of July, the day before my sweet sixteenth! I couldn’t wait until I found out what my present from my parents was.
On the morning of my birthday, I woke up at 6:00am, which is quite early for me, and found an envelope with my name on it, I jumped up and down while I was ripping the envelope open, to find tickets to Amsterdam inside!
So then straight away after breakfast I went straight on Wikipedia and researched Amsterdam. I found out that Amsterdam’s name derives from Amstreldamme, indicative of the city’sorigin as a dam of the river Amstel. Originating as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important ports in the world during the Dutch Golden Age (17th century), a result of it innovative developments in trade.
The next morning, we left for Dublin Airport. Once we got to Amsterdam, we booked into our hotel and we went out to the city. First, we made our way to the Rijksmuseum. Then we went to Anne Frank’s house, the Royal Palace, Dam Square and lots of other fantastic places.
My sweet sixteenth was the best ever!

Lá i Amstardam

Ní leor lá amháin chun na háiteanna go léir a fhéiceáil ach faraor ba é an méid ama a bhí agam i Amstardam.

Ar dtús, chuaigh mé go dtí teach Anne Frank. Bhí sé ar fheabhas. D’fhoghlaim mé alán faoi Anne Frank. Bhí sé an-suimiúil ag féachaint ar an áit ina raibh Anne Frank i bhfolach ar feadh dhá bhliain.

Ansin chuaigh mé go dtí an Musaem Van Gogh agus bhí níos mó ná 200 pictiúr ann. Bhí na pictiúir go hálainn. Ba é an ceann is fearr liom “The Starry Night”.

Chuaigh mé go dtí Páirc Vondel agus bhí pictiúrlann agus páirc súgartha. Bhí an-spórt agam.

Chuaigh mé go dtí Pálás Ríoga de Amstardam agus bhí sé galánta. Bhí an Pálás tógtha chun a bheith mar halla cathrach san aois óir a bhí ag an Ísiltír sa seachtú haois déag.

Ag deireadh, chuaigh mé go dtí an margadh bláthanna cáiliúil. Bhí go leor bláthanna difriúla ann agus bhí siad gleoite.

Bhí Amstardam go hiontach. Rachfainn arais i bpreab croí.

Amsterdam
It was just another Saturday morning spent on the couch for Lee. It was one moment in the afternoon that changed everything. His mom strolled into the room. But this time she didn’t say the usual things: “Turn the TV off!” or “get outside for some fresh air!” Oh no, she said one of the few things that could get Lee’s eyes off the television screen. “We’re moving to Amsterdam.” Lee stared at his mother blankly for a couple of seconds, waiting for her to burst out laughing and say she was joking. But she held his gaze. So Lee threw the longest, loudest, most terrible tantrum the world has ever seen…

One week later, Lee found himself boarding the Ryanair flight to Amsterdam. He was furious! He missed his friends already. He missed his house, he missed Dublin, he missed GAA, he even missed… oh the shame… HE MISSED SCHOOL (dun dun dunnn) all because his stupid dad got a new job.

The plane landed at 13:30. Ten minutes late. But that didn’t stop them. The all too familiar trumpet boomed out over the P.A. “Another on time flight from Ryanair!” Even this didn’t cheer Lee up.
The family headed for the tourist attractions when they left the airport. Lee found himself being dragged around the city. Anne Frank’s House, The Van Gogh Museum, The Rembrandt Museum, oh he couldn’t bear it! After the most boring day of Lee’s life, they left for the apartment.

The apartment was in the suburbs of Amsterdam. Lee’s mum didn’t like the look of it at first, but it was inside that Lee’s luck changed. As they were walking up the stairs, they noticed the glass all over the steps. They walked slowly down the hall. When they finally reached their door, a shocking sight met their eyes. The door was open. There was a man lying on the floor just outside the door.  Lee’s mum let out a scream. “We’re going home!” they all shouted and ran wee wee wee all the way home!

Amstardam

Dhá bhliain ó shin, bhí mo chlann ar laethanta saoire in Amstardam.
Dhúisiomar ag a hocht a chlog agus bhí an eitilt ag fágáil ag a deich. D’fhanamar an oiche in óstán an lá roimhe agus bhí sceitimíní orainn ar fad. Nuair a shroicheamar an chathair, bhi sé comh glan! Bhi na sráideanna go léir plódaithe le rothair. Nuair a shroicheamar an t-óstán, chuaigh muid  go dtí an seomra. Lig mé osna asam nuair a léim mé ar an leaba. Bhi sé an-chrua.
Chuaigh muid go dtí bialann álainn. Bhi orm sceallóga a fháil mar tá mé uafásach ag ithe. Tar éis an dinnéir , bhí  sé am dul a chodladh mar ba lá mór é an lá dar gcionn.
Dhúisíomar ag a ocht a chlog agus ar aghaidh linn go dtí teach Anne Frank. Bhi scuaine an-fhada agus bhi sé comh leadránach ag fanacht. Bhi an teach deas. Tar éis é sin, chuaigh muid go dti Musaem Van Gogh. Bhi na pictiúir go hálainn. Tar éis na cuairte, bhí tuirse orm agus chuaigh muid ar ais go dtí an t-óstán.
Ni raibh mé ag iarraidh fágáil ach bhí an eitilt ag dul i gceann dhá uaire. Ba mhaith liom dul ar ais go dti an Ísiltir arís.

A Day in Amsterdam

It was the beginning of the summer vacation. I woke up to a big surprise. We were going on a trip to Amsterdam. I couldn’t believe it, I was so excited. I had never been outside Ireland before and it would be the first time I was to fly in an aeroplane.
Everything from packing our bags, the trip to the airport and the flight itself happened in a blur. We booked into our hotel and decided to head straight out and see the sights. Armed with our tourist guide book we headed down the stairs and out onto the streets of Amsterdam, my eyes were open wide in amazement, everything looked so wonderful.
We had many different sites to go and visit, but the one I was very eager to see was Anne Frank’s House. The house was amazing, even more amazing than I thought it would be. It was a wonderful experience to be in the house where Anne and her family had hidden during World War 2. We also got to see the Academy Award that Shelly Winters won, in the 1959 film The Diary of Anne Frank. The award sits in a bullet-proof glass case in the museum.
Our next stop off was the museum where much of Van Gogh’s work is displayed, including the painting “Sunflowers” and “The Potato Eaters”. Up to 1.4million people visit the museum each year. We were all amazed by the beautiful buildings around us filled with so much history. We headed to the park for a picnic. Amsterdam has lots of parks but the one we headed to was called Vondelpark, the largest in the city. To finish off the day, we decided to take a boat trip on the canal. It was astonishing, I was amazed at all we could see from our little boat. I loved every second of it.
As we arrived back in our hotel I was exhausted. I leapt onto the bed and looked through the guide book, looking for more interesting places to visit tomorrow. I could not wait to experience another day in Amsterdam.

Day in Amsterdam

As the plane descended, my ears popped. It was the most horrible feeling I had ever felt. Every sound echoed in my eardrums. Finally, the plane landed in Amsterdam.

I grabbed my handbag and was one of the first people off the plane. The sun was shining and almost blinded me. I followed the few others, who had come out before me to the baggage carousel.

After I collected my suitcase, I walked to the train station and bought a return ticket. Ten minutes later, my train screeched to a stop. I boarded the train and took a seat by the window. My stop was the first stop.

‘Amsterdam Central’ the driver said over the intercom. When the train stopped, I got off and left the train and the station behind me. When I arrived at the hotel, I checked in. I unpacked my suitcase and looked at some brochures. I decided to go to Anne Frank’s House, The Rijksmuseum, The Museum of Bags and Purses and The Royal Palace of Amsterdam during the next two days.

The next morning, I woke up extra early so I could get to Anne Frank’s House. I ate my breakfast really fast, called a taxi and zoomed off to her house. Even though I got up at seven o’clock, there was still an enormous queue. When I finally arrived at the ticket booth, it was half passed ten!

I walked around the little room that the Franks were forced to stay in. I spent an hour or so there and then left to go to the Rijksmuseum. When I arrived, I used my museum pass that I had got at the hotel, to get in. I spent over three hours there, looking at exhibits, going to cafés, shops etc. Afterwards, I went back to the hotel.

In my little room, there was a bed, a kitchen, two bathrooms and a living room. I made a cup of tea and watched T.V. for a while and then went to bed.

The next day, I had a little bit of a sleep in, ate breakfast and went to the Museum of Bags and Purses. I took a few photos on my phone and sent them to my mum. She loves bags.

Next, I went to the Royal Palace of Amsterdam. It was great. I went back to the hotel and packed. I had a late dinner and went to bed. The next day I went home. I really enjoyed my trip!
