As part of our Social, Personal and Health Education (SPHE) curriculum delivery I wish to let you know about our school policy.
It is anticipated that the pupils will have a better awareness and understanding through this subject, taught by our school staff.  Pupils are also provided with a wide variety of complementary programmes delivered by   a guest speaker at the school’s request.   We co-operate as a school community to achieve a positive school culture where our pupils work together and learn to get along with each other.   As part of our Social, Personal and Health Education (SPHE) curriculum delivery we wish to let you know about our school policy which is available on the Scoil Raifteirí website: homepage, oifig, SPHE/OSPS (Rang 6), OCG/RSE 

 

Our school staff delivers the SPHE programme for all classes which includes:

Stay Safe Programme (Personal Safety awareness) Bí Sábháilte: class teacher during the school year.

Walk Tall Programme (Alcohol, drug awareness) Misneach: class teacher during the school year.

Relationship and Sexuality programme (RSE): class teachers in May.  (Class Themes as in Policy)

There may/may not be written homework in these areas.
Classes may/may not receive a leaflet to bring home during the lessons, or may be asked to discuss an aspect covered in class which will be prompted by the class teacher.

 

 

The following programmes take place in our school which complement our SPHE programme.  Many of the same themes are repeated in the following also.

HSE: Vaccinations, Personal health checks, oral hygiene, hearing, sight, teeth. 

‘Friends for Life’ pilot programme began this year:  Rang 4 le Múinteoirí Audrey and Máire.

‘Be My Witness’ Four night information evening for pupils of Rang 5 and Rang 6, before the confirmation which the parents facilitate and deliver through the parish.

‘Do this in Memory’ programme takes place before the Communion, which the parents facilitate and deliver through the parish.

Peer4Peer Transition Year programme delivered by trained students, covers topics included in the SPHE programme. 

An information evening with our school Garda Seán Ryan is arranged for parents every two years.  Following on from that a pre-arranged visit to classes Rang 5 agus Rang 6 is organised  to cover topics including the work of the Gardaí,  Safe use of  internet and mobile phones and the laws regarding,  anti-bullying, personal safety, promotion of good citizenship, etc.

Every year  we invite Mr. Noel Kearney, to deliver Relationships and Sexuality Education Programme (RSE), which takes place usually on the first two Wednesdays in May, 8-9.30 and 8-10pm. Text message and e-mail  containing the course content is forwarded ahead to parents and staff for information. The parents of Rang 6, members of the Board of Management, Coiste na dTuistí, and staff are invited to this information evening annually. Rang 6 pupils accompanied by their parents are invited to attend on the second Wednesday in May.

Fire safety and awareness for Rang 3 every year with a fire brigade staff member.

Bike Safety training every year for Rang 6 with Mr. Gerry Butler.

Road safety, Usage of Booster Chairs, Safety Belts, and Bike Safety Course took place this year in November for all classes delivered by RSA member.

Water Safety and Safety on the Farm, Agri-aware every June.

The delivery of the above may be limited according to availability of staffing and resources of the agencies.
